Friday night, Ellie and I had the privilege of attending the final performance of the Maryvale 11th grade drama production of Midsummer Night’s Dream. It was notable not only because Natalie was playing the part of Philostrate (as well as Stage Manager for the other performance), but also because it was the first time I have been able to walk into the Marley Center on my own two feet and sit through a performance of any kind in a regular chair rather than my wheelchair.
I found the whole evening extremely entertaining, as a former thespian myself. I thought the kids did a fantastic job, particularly since these are not the “theater kids” who go out for drama because it’s their thing – everybody in the class had a part in one of the two performances, and on their off night they were stage hands for the other cast. They could have totally phoned it in, but they swung for the bleachers and it was awesome. There were so many great moments, and my hat is off to the whole cast, stage crew, and their terrific director, Mrs. Rand-Lowe. Fabulous job, everyone!!
My only regret – and it is indeed a stinger – is that I didn’t bring my camera. I thought maybe it would be too big or too conspicuous or I don’t know what I thought, but I ended up taking a crap-ton of terrible phone pics. I’m glad I have them, at least, but I will NOT make this mistake again. I promise to be horribly conspicuous with my big white lens next time around. 😀 (I’ll wear black, at least I can do that much!)
