As I continue my march downward on the scales (including what has been an abysmally long plateau), I also like to mark my “non-scale victories” along the way.
Today’s victory can be considered both in that a) the scale is moving downward again, and b) for the first time in maybe 20 years, I was able to actually play the piano. And this is a major achievement because before losing weight, I could not reach my hands close enough together to play scales, or anything else. Too much of me in the way.
So to celebrate, today I played scales. I played some Bach to limber up my fingers –
And then some Pachelbel and finally Vangelis, as best I could do from memory. (And when I can do it as well as this guy I’ll post myself playing. :D)
As I sat there, hands on the keys of this piano on which I learned to play my brother’s piano lessons by ear before I could read, in my soaring heart I was hearing On the Dominant Divide from John Adams’ Grand Pianola Music.
God is so, so good.
