Of Many Drives, Musical Chairs, and Homecoming Week

This weekend there were many drives for me. Ellie needed to be at the school at 7:30am to warm up for an 8am volleyball game, so we got out the door at around 7:23 (!!) and made it just a couple of minutes late. Then back home again I had a few minutes to sit down before getting Natalie and Jordan out the door at 8:40 for Natalie’s 9am class. It was one of those crazy mornings that started with a sprinkle, then burst into a thunderstorm, and kept that up for a while throughout the day. I was driving back from the college drop off when Natalie called to say her class was cancelled – but wasn’t sure if Jordan’s would be, so that left me wondering if I should turn around and go back, or go home. I split the difference and parked at the Valero station a mile from the school and waited for her to update me. 10 minutes later she texted that I might as well go home. So I headed off and almost immediately got a call from Ellie saying she was done with the volleyball game, so I drove there instead of home. And while I was sitting in the parking lot waiting for Ellie to come out of the gym, Natalie called to say that she had just come out of a session with her advisor, and could I come get her because she didn’t want to stay four more hours till Jordan was finished. So we left the school and drove to the college and got her and then FINALLY I made it back home.

Then I had to make sure the kids all attended to their assigned Saturday chores and work on editing 1,681 photos Natalie had taken the last couple of days of Spirit week (Homecoming). She got some fun shots of the historical and literary figures dress up day, as well as the pep rally and powder puff football game. With my physical limitations, I can’t volunteer to help out at athletic events etc. – but I offer what skills I have, and photo editing is fun so it’s a win-win.

Anyway, normally Paul takes some of the Saturday driving, but he was doing driving of his own. You see, for many years, Ma Heidmann has been volunteering with a group of ladies who did sewing for sending clothing overseas. Their ministry has had to come to an end, and she told me they were selling the chairs they had been using for $10 apiece, and would I like to have any of them? After seeing a photo, I said yes, I can pay for 10 of those! They looked so much more comfortable than the wooden chairs I got when we bought the big double table! But then if she didn’t say no no, I’ll pay for them, Paul just has to come pick them up! So that is how it was that he found himself meeting Ma at her place at 10am Saturday and picking up 10 chairs to bring home! Of course, she took him to lunch first, and he had a delicious Reuben sandwich. I know it was delicious because he brought some of it home for me (a small compensation for missing our usual Satur-date).

The bonus on this new-chairs deal was that all the dining room chairs got moved outside under the lid to our outdoor dining area, so we have new seating everywhere!

And here are the new dining chairs – and before you say anything, yes, they look like conference center chairs. I don’t care, they are way more comfortable and I think they’re classy.

Parting shots: Some of Natalie’s pix from the week, including Western Day, Historical-Literary Figure Day, a Football Game, Powder-Puff Football, and a Pep rally, with actual musical chairs! 🙂
