December Ranch Trip 2024

December Ranch Trip 2024

By: Paul Heidmann

What a great time! We left right after Christmas (literally, the day after), early in the morning. When we pulled into St. Johns, we stopped to get groceries, and I told the kids to go get a cart. They came back with two baby carts (sheesh). I sent them back to get a real cart! Later that day, we drove over to the other side of the ranch (and, that’s quite a drive) to climb on those large hills with all that decomposed volcanic ash and those huge boulders. It sure is a lot of fun (sliding down the ash on your butt). I am especially proud of little Ruben for getting up so high with that cast.

It gets dark mighty early in the winter. That’s OK. We’ll just play Jenga and Uno. The next day, we drove up into the White Mountains, in search of snow. We didn’t find very much (been a dry winter), but we did find some! Stopped at McDonalds in Springerville for a late lunch! At the end of that day, we went off to what we call “Petroglyph Mountain”, which is not a mile from our cabin.

It was a great trip. At the end of it, I had a boring board meeting (I am the president of the POA that maintains the roads for the ranch). Happily, the meeting was in the library, and the kids didn’t want to leave, even after two hours (I love that they love to read).
